Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्य चिन्तयमानस्य प्रत्यभात् कर्म दुष्कृतम् ।
यद् अनेन कृतम् पूर्वम् अज्ञानात् शब्द वेधिना ॥ ॥२-६२-४॥
Tasya cintayamānasya pratyabhāt karma duṣkṛtam । Yad anena kṛtam pūrvam ajñānāt śabda vedhinā ॥ ॥2-62-4॥
Translation
While he was brooding, the sinful deed committed by him in the past out of ignorance, using his skill of aiming by sound (Shabdavedhi), flashed in his mind.

उस चिंता मग्न अवस्था में उन्हें अपने द्वारा पूर्वकाल में अज्ञानवश 'शब्दवेधी' बाण के प्रयोग से किया गया पाप (दुष्कर्म) याद आ गया।
English Commentary
This verse bridges the present tragedy with the past cause. Dasharatha possesses the rare skill of Shabdavedhi (archery guided by sound alone). He recalls a specific 'duṣkṛtam' (bad deed) committed through this skill out of ignorance (ajñānāt). The realization strikes him that his current suffering is not random; it is the cosmic payback for that past mistake. This moment signifies the King's acceptance that he is serving a sentence pronounced long ago, adding a layer of tragic destiny to the narrative.

यह श्लोक रामायण का एक महत्वपूर्ण 'फ्लैशबैक' बिंदु है। शब्दवेधी बाण विद्या (आवाज़ सुनकर निशाना लगाना) दशरथ का कौशल था, लेकिन यही कौशल उनके पतन का कारण बना। 'अज्ञानात्' शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है—पाप जानबूझकर नहीं, बल्कि अनजाने में हुआ था, फिर भी कर्मफल तो भोगना ही पड़ता है। दशरथ को अब समझ आ रहा है कि पुत्र-वियोग का यह दुख उसी पुराने पाप का दंड है। यह श्लोक कर्म सिद्धांत की अटल गति को स्थापित करता है।
