भर्ता तु खलु नारीणाम् गुणवान् निर्गुणो अपि वा ।
धर्मम् विमृशमानानाम् प्रत्यक्षम् देवि दैवतम् ॥ ॥२-६२-८॥
Bhartā tu khalu nārīṇām guṇavān nirguṇo api vā । Dharmam vimṛśamānānām pratyakṣam devi daivatam ॥ ॥2-62-8॥
Translation
"Indeed, for women who consider righteousness (Dharma), the husband, whether virtuous or devoid of virtue, is the visible deity."

"हे देवी! धर्म का विचार करने वाली स्त्रियों के लिए पति चाहे गुणवान हो या गुणहीन, वह प्रत्यक्ष देवता ही होता है।"
English Commentary
Dasharatha invokes the code of Dharma. He admits the possibility of being nirguṇo (without virtue/flawed) but implores her to remember the spiritual status of a husband in their culture. He addresses her as 'Devi,' elevating her while humbling himself. He is not commanding her submission; rather, he is pleading that she not abandon her own Dharma because of his failure. He is essentially saying, 'Even though I have failed you, your own righteousness should lead you to forgive me.'

दशरथ यहाँ अपनी सत्ता का प्रयोग नहीं कर रहे, बल्कि दीनतापूर्वक 'पतिव्रता धर्म' की याद दिला रहे हैं। वह स्वीकार करते हैं कि वह इस समय 'निर्गुण' (गुणहीन/दोषी) हो सकते हैं, परन्तु शास्त्र की दृष्टि में पति का स्थान देवता तुल्य है। यह वाक्य आधुनिक संदर्भ में विवादास्पद लग सकता है, लेकिन उस युग के संदर्भ में, दशरथ यह कह रहे हैं कि "मैं पापी हूँ, फिर भी तुम्हारा पति हूँ, अतः मुझ पर दया करो।" यह अधिकार की मांग नहीं, बल्कि दया की भिक्षा है।
