Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यथान्यः पुरुषः कश्चित्पलाशैर्मोओहितो भवेत् ।
एवम् मम अपि अविज्ञातम् शब्द वेध्यमयम् फलम् ॥ ॥२-६३-१३॥
Yathānyaḥ puruṣaḥ kaścit palāśair mohito bhavet |
Evam mama api avijñātam śabda vedhyam ayam phalam ॥2-63-13॥
Translation
Just as a man might be deluded by the appearance of Palasha flowers [thinking they promise fruit], so was the [tragic] consequence of my ability to shoot by sound unknown to me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे कोई व्यक्ति पलाश के (सुंदर दिखने वाले गंधहीन) फूलों को देखकर मोहित हो जाए (और उसे फलदायक समझ बैठे), वैसे ही शब्द-वेधी बाण चलाने की अपनी विद्या का यह (भयानक) फल मुझे ज्ञात नहीं था।
English Commentary
The Palasha tree bears striking, bright red flowers that are beautiful to behold but lack scent and produce no edible fruit. Dasharatha uses this metaphor to explain his delusion. He took pride in his Shabda-vedhi skill (the ability to shoot unseen targets by sound), viewing it as a great asset (like the beautiful flower). However, he failed to foresee that this very skill would lead to a catastrophic result. He admits he was charmed by his own power without understanding its potential for tragic consequences.

पलाश के फूल देखने में अत्यंत लाल और आकर्षक होते हैं, लेकिन उनमें न तो सुगंध होती है और न ही वे कोई खाद्य फल देते हैं। दशरथ कह रहे हैं कि उन्हें अपनी 'शब्दवेधी' विद्या (आवाज़ सुनकर सटीक बाण मारने की कला) पर बहुत गर्व था। उन्हें यह विद्या एक वरदान लगती थी (जैसे पलाश के फूल), लेकिन उन्हें यह नहीं पता था कि इसका परिणाम इतना कड़वा और विनाशकारी होगा। यह रूपक 'दिखावे बनाम वास्तविकता' के भ्रम को दर्शाता है।
