Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पाण्डुरारुणवर्णानि स्रोओताम्सि विमलान्यपि ।
सुस्रुवुर्गिरिधातुभ्यः सभस्मानि भुजङ्गवत् ॥ ॥२-६३-१९॥
Pāṇḍurāruṇavarṇāni srotāmsi vimalānyapi |
Susruvurgiridhātubhyaḥ sabhasmāni bhujaṅgavat ॥2-63-19॥
Translation
The streams, though [naturally] clear, flowed with pale white and reddish hues [due to mountain minerals], winding like serpents covered in ash.
हिंदी अनुवाद
पर्वतों की गेरू आदि धातुओं के घुलने से, निर्मल जल वाली नदियाँ भी सफेद (पाण्डुर) और लाल (अरुण) रंग की होकर, भस्म से लिपटे हुए साँपों के समान बहने लगीं।
English Commentary
The poet uses vivid color imagery here. The crystal-clear streams turn reddish and pale due to minerals, resembling blood or mixed fluids. Comparing the winding rivers to 'serpents covered in ash' introduces an element of danger and unpredictability within the scenic beauty. Ash (Bhasma) is also associated with ascetics and death. This metaphor subtly hints that the flowing river—where the tragedy will occur—is behaving like a venomous snake, ready to strike.

यहाँ दो महत्वपूर्ण उपमाएँ हैं: पानी का रंग बदलना और सर्प (साँप) से तुलना। पानी का लाल होना (रक्त जैसा) हिंसा का पूर्वाभास है। और नदियों की तुलना 'भस्म लिपटे सर्प' से करना खतरे का संकेत है। सौंदर्य के बीच मृत्यु छिपी है। भस्म (राख) का संबंध वैराग्य या मृत्यु से भी है। प्रकृति का यह रूप दशरथ के मन में छिपे उस खतरे को दर्शाता है जो अभी प्रकट होने वाला है।
