आकुलारुणतोयानि स्रोओताम्सि विमलान्यपि ।
उन्मार्गजलवाहीनि बभूवुर्जलदागमे ॥ ॥२-६३-२०॥
Ākulāruṇatoyāni srotāmsi vimalānyapi |
Unmārgajalavāhīni babhūvurjaladāgame ॥2-63-20॥
Translation
At the arrival of the rain clouds, the streams, though usually clear, carried agitated reddish water and flowed astray [overflowing their banks].
हिंदी अनुवाद
बादलों के आने (वर्षा) पर, निर्मल जल वाली नदियाँ भी व्याकुल और लाल रंग के जल वाली होकर, अपने मार्ग को छोड़कर (उन्मार्ग) बहने लगीं।
English Commentary
The keyword here is Unmarga (going off the path/astray). Just as the rains cause the rivers to breach their banks and flow wildly, passion has caused Dasharatha to breach the boundaries of prudence and royal duty. The agitation (akula) of the water reflects the agitation of the King's mind. This serves as a metaphor for the transgression that is about to happen—Dasharatha is venturing into moral territory where he does not belong (reckless hunting).

'उन्मार्ग' (मर्यादा या रास्ते से बाहर जाना) शब्द यहाँ अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। नदियाँ अपने तटों को तोड़कर बह रही हैं। यह दशरथ द्वारा नैतिक मर्यादा के उल्लंघन का प्रतीक है। एक राजा का धर्म रक्षा करना है, न कि अंधेरे में छिपकर किसी निर्दोष पर बाण चलाना। जैसे नदियाँ अपना रास्ता भूल गईं, वैसे ही राजा भी शिकार के व्यसन में अपना 'राजधर्म' भूल गए। प्रकृति और पात्र के बीच का यह सामंजस्य वाल्मीकि की लेखन शैली की विशेषता है।
