Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्मिन्न् अतिसुखे काले धनुष्मान् इषुमान् रथी ।
व्यायाम कृत सम्कल्पः सरयूम् अन्वगाम् नदीम् ॥ ॥२-६३-२१॥
Tasminn atisukhe kāle dhanuṣmān iṣumān rathī |
Vyāyāma kṛta samkalpaḥ sarayūm anvagām nadīm ॥2-63-21॥
Translation
In that exceedingly pleasant time, armed with a bow and arrows and riding a chariot, I went to the Sarayu river, resolved to engage in exercise [hunting].
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस अति सुखद समय में, धनुष और बाण धारण किए हुए, मैं रथ पर सवार होकर, 'व्यायाम' (शिकार/अभ्यास) का संकल्प लेकर सरयू नदी के तट पर गया।
English Commentary
Dasharatha clarifies his intent: he went for Vyayama (exercise/sport), not necessity. This highlights that the tragedy arose from a leisure activity, making the guilt heavier. The phrase 'exceedingly pleasant time' is used ironically; the perfect weather and the thrill of the hunt created a false sense of security before the disaster. He heads to the Sarayu river, usually a source of life, which is about to become the setting for a fatal mistake.

दशरथ स्पष्ट करते हैं कि वे भोजन के लिए शिकार नहीं कर रहे थे, बल्कि 'व्यायाम' (खेल/शौक) के लिए गए थे। 'अतिसुखे काले' (अत्यंत सुखद समय) का प्रयोग विडंबना (Irony) उत्पन्न करता है, क्योंकि यही सुखद समय उनके जीवन के सबसे बड़े दुःख का कारण बनने वाला है। सरयू नदी, जो अयोध्या की जीवनदायिनी है, यहाँ मृत्यु के स्थान के रूप में प्रस्तुत की गई है।
