अन्यम् चापि मृगम् हिम्स्रम् शब्दम् श्रुत्वाभु पागतम् ।
अथ अन्ध कारे तु अश्रौषम् जले कुम्भस्य पर्यतः ॥ ॥२-६३-२४॥
Anyam cāpi mṛgam himsram śabdam śrutvābhy upāgatam |
Atha andha kāre tu aśrauṣam jale kumbhasya pūryataḥ ॥2-63-24॥
Translation
I assumed that some other dangerous beast or deer had come to the water's edge. In that intense darkness, I heard only the sound of a pitcher being filled in the water.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैंने सोचा कि कोई अन्य हिंसक पशु या मृग नदी तट पर आया है। उस घोर अंधकार में मुझे केवल पानी में घड़ा (कुम्भ) भरने की ध्वनि सुनाई दी।
English Commentary
In this verse, King Dasharatha describes the fatal illusion that clouded his judgment. Despite being a master of Shabdavedhi (aiming by sound), the darkness and the specific acoustic environment of the forest tricked him. The bubbling sound of a pitcher (Kumbha) being submerged in water mimicked the sound of a wild elephant drinking. Dasharatha’s focus was solely on protecting the forest from wild beasts, and this predisposition led him to misinterpret the sound. This moment underscores how perception can be flawed by expectation, setting the stage for the impending tragedy.

इस श्लोक में महाराज दशरथ अपनी भ्रांति (confusion) का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। शब्दभेदी बाण विद्या में निपुण होने के बावजूद, यहाँ प्रकृति ने उनके साथ एक क्रूर खेल खेला। रात्रि के गहरे अंधकार में घड़े में पानी भरने की 'गड़-गड़' ध्वनि बिल्कुल वैसी ही प्रतीत हुई जैसे कोई हाथी अपनी सूंड से पानी खींच रहा हो। दशरथ का मन शिकार के उत्साह में था, इसलिए उन्होंने मानवीय ध्वनि और पशु की ध्वनि में अंतर करने की सावधानी नहीं बरती। यह क्षण उस त्रासदी की नींव थी जिसने आगे चलकर रामायण की दिशा बदल दी।
