शब्दम् प्रति गजप्रेप्सुरभिलक्ष्य त्वपातयम् ।
अमुन्चम् निशितम् बाणम् अहम् आशी विष उपमम् ॥ ॥२-६३-२६॥
Śabdam prati gajaprepsurabhilakṣya tvapātayam |
Amuncam niśitam bāṇam aham āśī viṣa upamam ॥2-63-26॥
Translation
Desiring to kill the elephant, and aiming solely at the sound, I released that sharp arrow which resembled a venomous snake.

हाथी को मारने की इच्छा से, केवल शब्द को लक्ष्य बनाकर, मैंने उस विषधर सर्प के समान तीखे बाण को छोड़ दिया।
English Commentary
This verse captures the irreversible moment of action. Dasharatha identifies himself as Gaja-prepsu (one desirous of the elephant), reiterating that his intent was hunting game, not homicide. He aimed strictly at the source of the sound. The repetition of the arrow's description as snake-like emphasizes the violence of the act. It serves as a poignant reminder that intent does not always align with outcome; the arrow, once released, acts blindly based on the archer's initial calculation, regardless of the true nature of the target.

यह श्लोक उस निर्णायक क्षण का वर्णन करता है जब बाण हाथ से छूट गया। दशरथ यहाँ स्वीकार करते हैं कि वे 'गजप्रेप्सु' (हाथी के इच्छुक) थे। उनका लक्ष्य शब्द (ध्वनि) था। एक बार जब कमान से तीर निकल जाता है, तो उसे वापस नहीं लिया जा सकता—यह कर्म के सिद्धांत का भी प्रतीक है। दशरथ की एकाग्रता अद्भुत थी, किन्तु उनका विवेक उस क्षण अंधकार में खो गया था। यह कृत्य अनजाने में किया गया था, परन्तु इसका परिणाम अटल और विनाशकारी होने वाला था।
