तस्मिन्निपतिते बाणे वागभूत्तत्र मानुषी ।
कथम् अस्मद् विधे शस्त्रम् निपतेत् तु तपस्विनि ॥ ॥२-६३-२८॥
Tasmin nipatite bāṇe vāgabhūttatra mānuṣī |
Katham asmad vidhe śastram nipatet tu tapasvini ॥2-63-28॥
Translation
When the arrow struck, a human voice spoke: "How can a weapon fall upon an ascetic like me?"

बाण लगने पर वहाँ से एक मानवीय स्वर गूँजा: "मुझ जैसे तपस्वी पर शस्त्र का प्रहार कैसे हो सकता है?"
English Commentary
The victim's reaction is one of bewildered innocence rather than anger. He questions the logic of the attack. By asking how a weapon could be used against someone of his nature (Tapasvi), he highlights the violation of Dharma. Ascetics are universally regarded as exempt from violence in Vedic society. His confusion amplifies the tragedy; he cannot conceive of a reason why anyone would perceive him as a threat, underlining the senselessness of his impending death.

घायल श्रवण कुमार का यह प्रश्न उसके निर्दोष और अहिंसक स्वभाव को दर्शाता है। उसे अपनी मृत्यु का दुःख तो है, परन्तु उससे अधिक आश्चर्य इस बात का है कि किसी ने उस पर आक्रमण क्यों किया। वह वन में रहने वाला एक साधारण तपस्वी है जिसका किसी से कोई बैर नहीं है। "कथम्" (कैसे/क्यों) शब्द उस घोर अन्याय को रेखांकित करता है। यह प्रश्न सीधे दशरथ की आत्मा को भेदने वाला था, क्योंकि क्षत्रिय का धर्म तपस्वियों की रक्षा करना है, न कि उनका वध करना।
