Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रविविक्ताम् नदीम् रात्राव् उदाहारः अहम् आगतः ।
इषुणा अभिहतः केन कस्य वा किम् कृतम् मया ॥ ॥२-६३-२९॥
Praviviktām nadīm rātrāv udāhāraḥ aham āgataḥ |
Iṣuṇā abhihataḥ kena kasya vā kim kṛtam mayā ॥2-63-29॥
Translation
"I came to this secluded river at night only to fetch water. By whom have I been struck with an arrow? What wrong have I done to anyone?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"मैं तो इस निर्जन नदी पर रात्रि में जल भरने आया था। मुझे बाण किसने मारा? मैंने किसी का क्या बिगाड़ा है?"
English Commentary
The young ascetic clarifies his harmless purpose: he was merely a Udahara (water-carrier) visiting a secluded river. The juxtaposition of his simple, life-sustaining task (fetching water) against the violence of the arrow is stark. His rhetorical questions—"Who hit me?" and "What did I do?"—strip away any possible justification for the act. It forces the perpetrator (Dasharatha) to confront the reality that he has killed someone purely out of negligence, not duty or defense.

यह श्लोक करुणा (pathos) की पराकाष्ठा है। श्रवण कुमार अपने उद्देश्य की सरलता बताता है—वह केवल जल लेने आया था। 'उदाहारः' का अर्थ है जल लाने वाला। उसका प्रश्न "मैंने किसी का क्या बिगाड़ा है?" दशरथ के अपराधबोध (guilt) को कई गुना बढ़ा देता है। यदि शत्रुता के कारण वध होता, तो उसका औचित्य हो सकता था, किन्तु एक निरपराध बालक, जो अपने माता-पिता की सेवा कर रहा था, उसका वध अक्षम्य अपराध है। यह श्लोक नियति की क्रूरता को दर्शाता है।
