ऋषेर् हि न्यस्त दण्डस्य वने वन्येन जीवतः ।
कथम् नु शस्त्रेण वधो मद् विधस्य विधीयते ॥ ॥२-६३-३०॥
Ṛṣer hi nyasta daṇḍasya vane vanyena jīvataḥ |
Katham nu śastreṇa vadho mad vidhasya vidhīyate ॥2-63-30॥
Translation
"I am a sage who has renounced violence and lives on forest produce. How can the killing of someone like me with a weapon be justified?"

"मैं एक ऋषि हूँ जिसने हिंसा (दंड) का त्याग कर दिया है और वन के कंद-मूल पर जीवित रहता हूँ। मुझ जैसे व्यक्ति का शस्त्र से वध कैसे उचित माना जा सकता है?"
English Commentary
Here, the victim appeals to the code of chivalry and Dharma. He describes himself as one who has "put down the staff" (nyasta danda), symbolizing total renunciation of aggression. He subsists on what the forest freely gives. In Vedic warfare codes, targeting such a person is strictly forbidden. By stating these facts, Shravan Kumara points out the gross violation of moral law involved in his killing. It serves as a sharp critique of the archer's lack of discrimination.

यहाँ श्रवण कुमार धर्म और नीति की बात करते हैं। 'न्यस्त दण्डस्य' का अर्थ है जिसने हाथ से लाठी/दंड त्याग दिया हो, अर्थात जो पूर्णतः अहिंसक हो। शास्त्रों के अनुसार, जो व्यक्ति शस्त्रहीन और अहिंसक हो, उस पर प्रहार करना कायरता और अधर्म है। वह 'वन्येन जीवतः' है, अर्थात वह प्रकृति पर आश्रित है और किसी के संसाधनों का अपहरण नहीं करता। यह श्लोक दशरथ को यह एहसास दिलाता है कि उन्होंने केवल एक मनुष्य को नहीं, बल्कि एक ब्राह्मण-तुल्य सात्विक आत्मा को मारा है।
