जटा भार धरस्य एव वल्कल अजिन वाससः ।
को वधेन मम अर्थी स्यात् किम् वा अस्य अपकृतम् मया ॥ ॥२-६३-३१॥
Jaṭā bhāra dharasya eva valkala ajina vāsasaḥ |
Ko vadhena mama arthī syāt kim vā asya apakṛtam mayā ॥2-63-31॥
Translation
"I wear matted hair and am clad in bark and deerskin. Who would benefit from killing me? Or what harm have I done to him?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"मैं जटाओं का भार धारण करता हूँ और वल्कल (पेड़ की छाल) तथा मृगचर्म पहनता हूँ। मेरे वध से किसी को क्या लाभ होगा? मैंने उसका क्या अनिष्ट किया है?"
English Commentary
The ascetic describes his appearance—matted hair (Jata), bark garments (Valkala), and deerskin (Ajina)—signifiers of a person who has opted out of material competition. He logically questions the motive: since he possesses nothing of value and wields no power, what "profit" (Arthi) could his death possibly bring anyone? This highlights the absolute futility of the act. It renders the violence not just cruel, but absurd and devoid of any rational purpose.

श्रवण कुमार अपनी वेशभूषा का वर्णन करते हुए कहते हैं कि वे एक सन्यासी की तरह रहते हैं। उनके पास न धन है, न राज्य, जिसे लूटने के लिए कोई उन्हें मारे। 'को वधेन मम अर्थी स्यात्' (मेरे वध से किसको क्या प्रयोजन/लाभ है?)—यह प्रश्न हत्या की निरर्थकता को उजागर करता है। आम तौर पर हत्या लोभ, क्रोध या बदले की भावना से की जाती है, लेकिन यहाँ इनमें से कोई भी कारण नहीं था। यह दशरथ के लिए अत्यंत लज्जा का विषय था कि उन्होंने एक ऐसे व्यक्ति को मारा जिसका अस्तित्व ही त्याग पर आधारित था।
