नहम् तथा अनुशोचामि जीवित क्षयम् आत्मनः ।
मातरम् पितरम् च उभाव् अनुशोचामि मद् विधे ॥ ॥२-६३-३३॥
Naham tathā anuśocāmi jīvita kṣayam ātmanaḥ |
Mātaram pitaram ca ubhāv anuśocāmi mad vidhe ॥2-63-33॥
Translation
"I do not grieve for the loss of my own life as much as I grieve for my mother and father, both of whom are dependent on me."

"मैं अपने प्राण जाने का उतना शोक नहीं कर रहा हूँ, जितना शोक मुझे अपने माता और पिता के लिए हो रहा है, जो मुझ पर ही आश्रित हैं।"
English Commentary
This verse defines the character of Shravan Kumara as the epitome of filial piety. Even in his dying moments, his distress is displaced from his own self (Atmanah) to his parents. He is not afraid of death, but he is terrified of what his death implies for his blind, elderly parents. This selflessness elevates the tragedy; Dasharatha hasn't just killed a boy; he has destroyed the lifeline of a family. This realization hits Dasharatha harder than the act of killing itself.

यह श्लोक 'मातृदेवो भव, पितृदेवो भव' की भावना का सर्वोत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है। मृत्यु के मुख में खड़ा व्यक्ति प्रायः अपनी पीड़ा या अधूरी इच्छाओं के बारे में सोचता है, किन्तु श्रवण कुमार का एकमात्र दुःख उनके माता-पिता हैं। 'मद् विधे' (मेरे जैसे/मुझ पर आश्रित) शब्द बताता है कि वे उनके एकमात्र सहारे थे। यह निस्वार्थ प्रेम और कर्तव्यपरायणता दशरथ के हृदय को विदीर्ण करने के लिए पर्याप्त थी, क्योंकि दशरथ स्वयं एक पिता थे और पुत्र-प्रेम की गहराई को समझते थे।
