स माम् उद्वीक्ष्य नेत्राभ्याम् त्रस्तम् अस्वस्थ चेतसम् ।
इति उवाच वचः क्रूरम् दिधक्षन्न् इव तेजसा ॥ ॥२-६३-४०॥
Sa mām udvīkṣya netrābhyām trastam asvastha cetasam |
Iti uvāca vacaḥ krūram didhakṣann iva tejasā ॥2-63-40॥
Translation
Staring at me with his eyes—me, who was terrified and mentally unhinged—he spoke these harsh words, as if burning me with his spiritual radiance.

उसने मुझे डरा हुआ और मानसिक रूप से अस्थिर देखकर अपनी आँखों से देखा, और मानो अपने तेज से मुझे जलाते हुए यह कठोर वचन कहा।
English Commentary
There is a powerful inversion of status here. The armed King is terrified (Trastam) and mentally unstable (Asvastha), while the dying victim commands the scene with his spiritual fire (Tejas). The description "as if burning me" suggests that the ascetic's moral outrage was more potent than any physical weapon. Dasharatha feels the heat of his sin through the piercing gaze of the victim.

यहाँ शक्ति का संतुलन बदल गया है। यद्यपि दशरथ के हाथ में शस्त्र था और ऋषिकुमार मरणासन्न था, फिर भी भयभीत दशरथ थे और प्रभावी ऋषिकुमार। 'दिधक्षन्न् इव तेजसा' (मानो अपने तेज से भस्म कर देगा)—यह तपस्या की शक्ति है। एक घायल तपस्वी की दृष्टि में इतना तेज था कि चक्रवर्ती राजा भी उसके सामने तुच्छ महसूस कर रहा था। ऋषिकुमार के शब्द 'क्रूर' (कठोर) थे क्योंकि वे सत्य थे और सत्य उस समय दशरथ के लिए असहनीय था।
