Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सशल्यः क्लिश्यते प्राणैर्विशल्यो विनशिष्यति ।
इति मामविशच्चिन्ता तस्य शल्यापकर्षणे ॥ ॥२-६३-४९॥
saśalyaḥ kliśyate prāṇairviśalyo vinaśiṣyati । iti māmaviśaccintā tasya śalyāpakarṣaṇe ॥ ॥2-63-49॥
Translation
If the arrow remains, he suffers with his life; if the arrow is removed, he will perish. Such a dilemma regarding the extraction of the arrow entered my mind.
हिंदी अनुवाद
बाण लगे रहने पर इसे प्राणन्तक पीड़ा हो रही है, और बाण निकालते ही इसकी मृत्यु हो जाएगी। बाण निकालने के विषय में मुझे (दशरथ को) यह भारी चिंता होने लगी।
English Commentary
This verse captures the excruciating moral and medical dilemma facing King Dasharatha. He realizes he is in a lose-lose situation: leaving the arrow in causes the boy torture, but extracting it guarantees immediate death. This moment humanizes Dasharatha deeply; he is paralyzed by the weight of his accidental crime. It reflects the helplessness of a powerful warrior who can inflict a wound but cannot heal it, highlighting the irreversibility of such tragic mistakes.

यह श्लोक दशरथ की भीषण मानसिक द्वंद्व (dilemma) को दर्शाता है। यह एक 'धर्मसंकट' की स्थिति है। एक ओर तड़पता हुआ बालक है जिसे बाण के कारण असहनीय पीड़ा हो रही है, दूसरी ओर राजा जानते हैं कि बाण निकालते ही रक्तस्राव से उसकी मृत्यु निश्चित है। दशरथ की यह चिंता उनकी संवेदनशीलता और पश्चाताप को दिखाती है; वे उस बालक को न तो तड़पते देख सकते हैं और न ही उसे अपने हाथों से मृत्यु के मुख में भेजना चाहते हैं।
