त्वम् गतिस् तु अगतीनाम् च चक्षुस् त्वम् हीन चक्षुषाम् ।
समासक्ताः त्वयि प्राणाः किम्चिन् नौ न अभिभाषसे ॥ ॥२-६४-१०॥
tvam gatis tu agatīnām ca cakṣus tvam hīna cakṣuṣām । samāsaktāḥ tvayi prāṇāḥ kimcin nau na abhibhāṣase ॥ ॥2-64-10॥
Translation
"You are the refuge of the helpless, and you are the eyes of the sightless. Our lives are fastened to you. Why do you not speak anything to us?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम हम गतिहीनों की गति (सहारा) हो, हम नेत्रहीनों के नेत्र हो। हमारे प्राण तुम में ही अटके हुए हैं। तुम हमसे कुछ बोलते क्यों नहीं?
English Commentary
This verse defines the existential dependence of the parents. They do not just love him; they survive through him. He is their Gati (refuge/movement) and their Chakshu (eyes). The phrase "Our lives are fastened to you" is prophetic—if the link is broken, their lives end. The desperation in "Why do you not speak?" forces Dasharatha to break his silence, as he can no longer bear the weight of their hopeful confusion.

यह श्लोक पुत्र के महत्व को पूरी तरह परिभाषित करता है। वह केवल पुत्र नहीं है, वह उनकी 'आँखें' और उनकी 'गति' है। 'समासक्ताः त्वयि प्राणाः'—अर्थात हमारे प्राण हमारे शरीर में नहीं, तुम में बसते हैं। यह कथन शाब्दिक रूप से सत्य सिद्ध होने वाला है, क्योंकि पुत्र की मृत्यु का समाचार मिलते ही वे भी प्राण त्याग देंगे। पिता की यह गुहार दशरथ को सत्य बोलने के लिए विवश कर देती है।
