Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यद् व्यलीकम् कृतम् पुत्र मात्रा ते यदि वा मया ।
न तन् मनसि कर्तव्यम् त्वया तात तपस्विना ॥ ॥२-६४-९॥
yad vyalīkam kṛtam putra mātrā te yadi vā mayā । na tan manasi kartavyam tvayā tāta tapasvinā ॥ ॥2-64-9॥
Translation
"Son, if either your mother or I have done anything displeasing to you, you should not hold it in your mind, O Ascetic."
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे पुत्र! यदि मैंने या तुम्हारी माता ने (अनजाने में) कुछ अप्रिय किया हो, तो तुम तपस्वी हो, तुम्हें उसे अपने मन में नहीं रखना चाहिए।
English Commentary
When Dasharatha remains silent, the anxious father assumes the son is sulking. The parents' humility is touching; they are ready to apologize to their own child to break his silence. They appeal to his nature as a tapasvi (ascetic), implying that holding a grudge is beneath him. This shows their absolute emotional vulnerability; they cannot afford for their son to be angry with them.

जब दशरथ कुछ नहीं बोले (चुप रहे), तो पिता को लगा कि शायद पुत्र किसी बात पर रूठ गया है। वे क्षमा मांग रहे हैं। वृद्ध माता-पिता का अपनी ही संतान से डरना—कि कहीं वह एकमात्र सहारा उन्हें छोड़ न दे या नाराज न हो जाए—उनकी विवशता को दिखाता है। वे उसे 'तपस्वी' कहकर उसके धर्म और क्षमाशील स्वभाव की याद दिला रहे हैं।
