भगवमः च अपहस्तः अहम् सरयू तीरम् आगतः ।
जिघाम्सुः श्वा पदम् किम्चिन् निपाने वा आगतम् गजम् ॥ ॥२-६४-१४॥
bhagavan cāpahastaḥ aham sarayū tīram āgataḥ । jighāmsuḥ śvā padam kimcin nipāne vā āgatam gajam ॥ ॥2-64-14॥
Translation
"O Holy One! I came to the banks of the Sarayu with a bow in my hand, desiring to kill a wild beast or an elephant that had come to the watering place."

हे भगवन! मैं हाथ में धनुष लिए सरयू नदी के तट पर आया था। मेरी इच्छा किसी हिंसक पशु या पानी पीने आए हाथी को मारने की थी।
English Commentary
Dasharatha explains the context to differentiate the act from premeditated murder. He addresses the sage respectfully as Bhagavan. He clarifies that he was armed (cāpahastaḥ) and hunting for game—specifically dangerous predators (śvā padam) or elephants. This context is vital: he was performing a royal duty (hunting/protection) but made a catastrophic error in judgment regarding the target.

दशरथ यहाँ अपने 'उद्देश्य' (Intent) को स्पष्ट कर रहे हैं। वे हत्यारे नहीं, शिकारी थे। 'चाप-हस्तः' (हाथ में धनुष लिए) वे शिकार के लिए आए थे। उनका लक्ष्य 'श्वापदम्' (जंगली जानवर/शेर) या 'गजम्' (हाथी) था। यह स्पष्टीकरण महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि यह स्थापित करता है कि मुनिकुमार की हत्या 'भूलवश' हुई है, द्वेषवश नहीं। फिर भी, रात्रि में शिकार करना और शब्दभेदी बाण चलाना एक जोखिम था जो दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण सिद्ध हुआ।
