ततः श्रुतः मया शब्दो जले कुम्भस्य पूर्यतः ।
द्विपो अयम् इति मत्वा हि बाणेन अभिहतः मया ॥ ॥२-६४-१५॥
tataḥ śrutaḥ mayā śabdo jale kumbhasya pūryataḥ । dvipo ayam iti matvā hi bāṇena abhihataḥ mayā ॥ ॥2-64-15॥
Translation
"Then, I heard the sound of a pitcher being filled in the water. Thinking 'This is an elephant,' indeed, it was struck by me with an arrow."

तब मैंने जल में घड़ा भरने का शब्द सुना। 'यह हाथी है' - ऐसा मानकर मैंने उस पर बाण चला दिया।
English Commentary
This verse details the mechanism of the tragedy. The sound of the pitcher filling (kumbhasya pūryataḥ) mimicked the sound of an elephant drinking. Dasharatha, relying solely on auditory cues, made a fatal assumption (iti matvā - thinking thus). He confirms the direct causality: he heard the sound, misidentified the source, and released the lethal arrow. It is a frank admission of the specific error that led to their son's death.

यहाँ दुर्घटना का मूल कारण बताया गया है। घड़े में पानी भरने की आवाज़ (बुड़-बुड़) हाथी की सूंड से पानी खींचने की आवाज़ जैसी लगी। दशरथ शब्दभेदी बाण विद्या में निपुण थे, पर यहाँ उनकी विद्या ही उनके पतन का कारण बनी। 'इति मत्वा' (ऐसा मानकर) - यह उनकी गलतफहमी (mistake of fact) थी। उन्होंने बाण चलाया और अनजाने में अनर्थ हो गया।
