भगवन् शब्दम् आलक्ष्य मया गज जिघाम्सुना ।
विसृष्टः अम्भसि नाराचः तेन ते निहतः सुतः ॥ ॥२-६४-१७॥
bhagavan śabdam ālakṣya mayā gaja jighāmsunā । visṛṣṭaḥ ambhasi nārācaḥ tena te nihataḥ sutaḥ ॥ ॥2-64-17॥
Translation
"O Holy One! Aiming at the sound and desiring to kill an elephant, I released the arrow into the water; by that, your son was killed."
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे भगवन! शब्द को लक्ष्य मानकर और हाथी को मारने की इच्छा से, मैंने जल में वह 'नाराच' (बाण) छोड़ा था; उसी से आपका पुत्र मारा गया।
English Commentary
Dasharatha explicitly connects his intention (hunting an elephant) with the accidental outcome (killing the son). He admits to using a Naracha—a formidable iron arrow usually reserved for thick-skinned beasts like elephants, which explains why the boy stood no chance. Addressing the grieving father as "Bhagavan" shows Dasharatha's submission to the sage's spiritual authority amidst this confession.

दशरथ यहाँ पुनः 'शब्दम् आलक्ष्य' (शब्द को लक्ष्य करके) कहकर अपनी विद्या और अपनी भूल दोनों को स्पष्ट करते हैं। वे 'नाराच' (लोहे का बना भारी बाण) के प्रयोग की बात स्वीकार करते हैं, जिसका वार खाली नहीं जाता। वे 'तेन' (उससे) कहकर कार्य-कारण सम्बन्ध (cause and effect) स्थापित करते हैं कि उनकी ही गलती से पुत्र का वध हुआ। 'भगवन' सम्बोधन उनकी विनम्रता और ऋषि के प्रति सम्मान को दर्शाता है।
