यद्य् एतत् अशुभम् कर्म न स्म मे कथयेः स्वयम् ।
फलेन् मूर्धा स्म ते राजन् सद्यः शत सहस्रधा ॥ ॥२-६४-२३॥
yady etat aśubham karma na sma me kathayeḥ svayam । phalen mūrdhā sma te rājan sadyaḥ śata sahasradhā ॥ ॥2-64-23॥
Translation
"If you had not told me of this inauspicious deed yourself, O King, your head would have instantly shattered into a hundred thousand pieces."
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राजन! यदि तुमने स्वयं आकर मुझे यह अशुभ कर्म (समाचार) न बताया होता, तो अभी तुम्हारे मस्तक के तत्काल सौ-हजार (लाखों) टुकड़े हो जाते।
English Commentary

यह श्लोक 'सत्य' की शक्ति और तपस्वी के प्रभाव को सिद्ध करता है। ऋषि कहते हैं कि दशरथ की 'स्वयं स्वीकृति' (Confession) ने उन्हें बचा लिया। यदि दशरथ चुप रहते या झूठ बोलते, तो ऋषि के तप के प्रभाव से उनका सिर फट जाता। यह ब्रह्म-शक्ति का भय है। सत्य बोलने के कारण दशरथ का जीवन तो बच गया, पर शाप से वे नहीं बच पाएंगे।
