Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न न्व् अहम् ते प्रियः पुत्र मातरम् पश्य धार्मिक ।
किम् नु न आलिन्गसे पुत्र सुकुमार वचो वद ॥ ॥२-६४-३१॥
Na nv aham te priyaḥ putra mātaram paśya dhārmika । Kim nu na ālingase putra sukumāra vaco vada ॥ ॥2-64-31॥
Translation
My son, am I not dear to you? O righteous one, look at your mother. Why do you not embrace me, my son? Speak to me with your gentle words.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे पुत्र! क्या मैं तुम्हें प्रिय नहीं हूँ? हे धर्मपरायण! अपनी माँ को देखो। हे बेटा! तुम मुझे गले क्यों नहीं लगाते? सुकोमल वचन बोलो।
English Commentary
This verse illustrates the initial shock and denial inherent in deep grief. The father addresses the corpse as if the son were merely sulking or sleeping. Asking, 'Am I not dear to you?' implies that the son's silence is a choice, a refusal to engage, rather than death. He implores the son to look at his mother and speak sweet words, reverting to their daily interactions. It highlights the pathetic nature of the situation—a blind father asking a dead son to 'look' and 'speak.' It is a desperate attempt to solicit a response from the void, showcasing the father's inability to immediately accept the finality of the loss.

मृत्यु के तुरंत बाद, शोक संतप्त व्यक्ति अक्सर इनकार (denial) की स्थिति में होता है। पिता यहाँ अपने मृत पुत्र से ऐसे बात कर रहे हैं जैसे वह जीवित हो। "क्या मैं तुम्हें प्रिय नहीं हूँ?"—यह प्रश्न उस गहरे स्नेह को दर्शाता है जहाँ पिता को विश्वास नहीं हो रहा कि पुत्र जानबूझकर चुप है। 'मातरम् पश्य' (माँ को देखो) कहना और भी अधिक दयनीय है क्योंकि न तो माता-पिता देख सकते हैं और न ही मृत पुत्र। वह अपने पुत्र से उन सामान्य क्रियाओं (गले मिलना, बोलना) की मांग कर रहे हैं जो अब असंभव हैं। यह संवाद पाठक के हृदय को द्रवित कर देता है।
