इमाम् अन्धाम् च वृद्धाम् च मातरम् ते तपस्विनीम् ।
कथम् पुत्र भरिष्यामि कृपणाम् पुत्र गर्धिनीम् ॥ ॥२-६४-३६॥
Imām andhām ca vṛddhām ca mātaram te tapasvinīm । Katham putra bhariṣyāmi kṛpaṇām putra gardhinīm ॥ ॥2-64-36॥
Translation
O son, how shall I support this blind, old, ascetic mother of yours, who is wretched and longing for her son?

हे पुत्र! तुम्हारी इस अंधी, बूढ़ी, तपस्विनी और पुत्र की लालसा रखने वाली दीन माता का भरण-पोषण मैं कैसे करूँगा?
English Commentary
Shift of focus from self to the wife. The sage's despair is compounded by his responsibility towards Shravan’s mother. He lists her vulnerabilities: blind (andhām), old (vṛddhām), and devout (tapasvinīm). The most painful descriptor is putra gardhinīm (greedy/longing for her son). He realizes his own incapacity (katham bhariṣyāmi - how will I sustain her?) because he shares her disability. This verse highlights the tragedy of the breakdown of a family unit where the child was the sole pillar supporting two fragile lives. It is a cry of absolute helplessness regarding their future survival.

एक आदर्श गृहस्थ और पति होने के नाते, पिता को अपनी चिंता से अधिक अपनी पत्नी की चिंता है। वे पूछते हैं, "मैं कैसे भरण-पोषण करूँगा?" (कथम् भरिष्यामि)। स्वयं नेत्रहीन होते हुए, वे जानते हैं कि वे अपनी पत्नी की देखभाल करने में असमर्थ हैं। यहाँ माँ के लिए 'पुत्र गर्धिनीम्' (पुत्र की तीव्र इच्छा रखने वाली) विशेषण का प्रयोग हुआ है, जो बताता है कि माँ का जीवन केवल पुत्र के प्रेम पर टिका था। पिता को यह ग्लानि खाए जा रही है कि वे न तो पुत्र को बचा सके और न ही अब पत्नी को जीवित रख पाएंगे।
