Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
गो सहस्र प्रदातृऋणाम् या या गुरुभृताम् अपि ।
देह न्यास कृताम् या च ताम् गतिम् गच्च पुत्रक ॥ ॥२-६४-४५॥
Go sahasra pradātṛṛṇām yā yā gurubhṛtām api । Deha nyāsa kṛtām yā ca tām gatim gacca putraka ॥ ॥2-64-45॥
Translation
"May you attain that state which belongs to the givers of a thousand cows, to those who serve their Gurus, and to those who give up their bodies (in meditation or sacrifice), O son."

"हजारों गायों का दान करने वालों को, गुरु की सेवा करने वालों को और (योग या तप द्वारा) देह त्याग करने वालों को जो गति प्राप्त होती है, हे पुत्र! तुम उसी गति को प्राप्त करो।"
English Commentary
Continuing the list of merits, the sage highlights Go-dana (gift of cows), Guru-sewa (service to the teacher), and Deha-nyasa (yogic abandonment of the body). The inclusion of "those who serve their Gurus" is the central theme here; Shravan Kumar is the archetype of such service. The blessing implies that the boy’s involuntary death is spiritually equivalent to the voluntary casting off of the body by high-souled yogis. The repetition of gacca (go) acts as a mantra, propelling the soul forward on its journey.

'गो-दान' (गायों का दान) वैदिक संस्कृति में महादान माना जाता है। 'गुरुभृताम्' (गुरु की सेवा) यहाँ सबसे प्रासंगिक है क्योंकि माता-पिता ही आदि-गुरु हैं। 'देह न्यास' का अर्थ है स्वेच्छा से या उच्च उद्देश्य के लिए शरीर छोड़ना। पिता कह रहे हैं कि यद्यपि तुम्हारी मृत्यु दुर्घटना में हुई, पर तुम्हारी सेवा भावना ने इसे एक 'यज्ञ' बना दिया है। यह एक पिता का अंतिम प्रयास है कि वह अपने पुत्र की आत्मा को हर प्रकार के पुण्य से लादकर विदा करे ताकि परलोक में उसे कोई कष्ट न हो।
