तन् निमित्ताभिर् आसीनौ कथाभिर् अपरिक्रमौ ।
ताम् आशाम् मत् कृते हीनाव् उदासीनाव् अनाथवत् ॥ ॥२-६४-५॥
tan nimittābhir āsīnau kathābhir aparikramau । tām āśām mat kṛte hīnāv udāsīnāv anāthavat ॥ ॥2-64-5॥
Translation
Sitting there unable to move about, they were conversing about him (their son). Because of me, they were bereft of that hope and sat listinglessly like orphans.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे दोनों (आश्रम में) बैठे हुए उसी (पुत्र) से सम्बंधित बातें कर रहे थे। मेरे कारण उनकी आशा नष्ट हो चुकी थी, और वे अनाथों की भांति उदास बैठे थे।
English Commentary
The tragic irony is palpable. The parents are motionless (aparikramau), passing the time by talking about the very son who has just been killed. They are holding onto a hope that Dasharatha knows he has already destroyed. The description of parents as "like orphans" (anāthavat) is powerful—reversing the natural order where parents care for children. Here, without their son, they are completely destitute and abandoned, and Dasharatha bears the crushing weight of being the cause (mat kṛte).

यहाँ 'करुण रस' और 'विडंबना' (irony) का मिश्रण है। माता-पिता अपने पुत्र की ही चर्चा कर रहे हैं, इस आस में कि वह अभी जल लेकर आएगा। वे नहीं जानते कि जिस पुत्र की वे बात कर रहे हैं, वह अब नहीं रहा। 'मत् कृते' (मेरे कारण) शब्द दशरथ के आत्म-धिक्कार को दर्शाता है। दशरथ स्वीकारते हैं कि उन्होंने उन वृद्धों को 'अनाथ' बना दिया है—प्रायः बच्चे अनाथ होते हैं, पर यहाँ पुत्र की मृत्यु ने माता-पिता को अनाथ कर दिया है।
