शोकोपहतचित्तश्च भयसम्त्रस्तचेतनः ।
तच्चाश्रमपदम् गत्वा भूयः शोकमहम् गतः ॥ ॥२-६४-६॥
śokopahatacittaśca bhayasamtrastacetanaḥ । taccāśramapadam gatvā bhūyaḥ śokamaham gataḥ ॥ ॥2-64-6॥
Translation
With a mind struck by grief and a consciousness trembling with fear, having entered that hermitage, I fell into even greater sorrow.
हिंदी अनुवाद
शोक से व्याकुल मन और भय से संतप्त चेतना वाले मैंने, उस आश्रम में जाकर और भी अधिक शोक प्राप्त किया।
English Commentary
This verse delineates Dasharatha's internal turmoil. He is not approaching as a King, but as a terrified penitent. His mind is "struck by grief" and his awareness is "trembling with fear." Usually, entering an ashram brings peace, but for Dasharatha, it amplifies his sorrow because the peaceful setting contrasts sharply with the violent news he brings. It highlights that the anticipation of confessing a terrible sin is a torture in itself.

दशरथ की मानसिक स्थिति एक अपराधी जैसी है। यद्यपि वे राजा हैं, किन्तु यहाँ वे 'भयसम्त्रस्तचेतनः' (डर से कांपती चेतना वाले) हैं। उन्हें ऋषियों के श्राप का भय तो है ही, परन्तु उससे बड़ा भय उस सत्य का सामना करना है। आश्रम की शांति और वहां बैठे माता-पिता को देखकर उनका दुख कम नहीं हुआ, बल्कि 'भूयः' (और अधिक) बढ़ गया। यह श्लोक बताता है कि पाप का बोझ दंड मिलने से पहले ही अपराधी को दंडित करने लगता है।
