Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अद्य एव जहि माम् राजन् मरणे न अस्ति मे व्यथा ।
यत् शरेण एक पुत्रम् माम् त्वम् अकार्षीर् अपुत्रकम् ॥ ॥२-६४-५३॥
Adya eva jahi mām rājan maraṇe na asti me vyathā । Yat śareṇa eka putram mām tvam akārṣīr aputrakam ॥ ॥2-64-53॥
Translation
"O King, kill me right now. I have no pain in dying, for by your arrow, you have rendered me, who had only one son, sonless."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे राजन्! मुझे अभी मार डालो। मुझे मरने में कोई दुःख नहीं होगा, क्योंकि तुमने अपने एक बाण से इस 'एक पुत्र वाले' (मुझ) को पुत्रहीन कर दिया है।"
English Commentary
The sage invites death as a relief. His statement, "Kill me right now," reveals that living without his son is a torture he wishes to end. He accuses Dasharatha of making him aputrakam (sonless) with a single arrow. The tragedy lies in the singularity of the loss—eka putram (one son). There is no backup, no alternative. This despair validates the impending curse; it is not born of malice, but of the absolute experiential truth that a parent cannot survive the loss of their only child.

ऋषि का यह कथन उनकी जीवन-च्छा की समाप्ति को दर्शाता है। वे राजा को 'मारने' का आदेश दे रहे हैं क्योंकि पुत्र के बिना जीवन उनके लिए मृत्यु से भी अधिक कष्टकारी है। 'एक पुत्रम्' शब्द उस रिक्तता को गहरा करता है—उनके पास कोई दूसरा सहारा नहीं था। दशरथ ने केवल पुत्र को नहीं मारा, बल्कि पिता के जीवित रहने के कारण को ही मार दिया है। यह श्लोक 'पुत्र-शोक' की तीव्रता को स्थापित करता है, जो आगे चलकर शाप का आधार बनेगा।
