Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तदेतच्चिन्तयानेन स्मऋतम् पापम् मया स्वयम् ।
तदा बाल्यात्कृतम् देवि शब्दवेध्यनुकर्षिणा ॥ ॥२-६४-५९॥
Tad etac cintayānena smṛtam pāpam mayā svayam । Tadā bālyāt kṛtam devi śabdavedhy anukarṣiṇā ॥ ॥2-64-59॥
Translation
"Thinking about this (Rama's exile), O Queen, I have myself remembered that sin which I committed in my youth while practicing the art of aiming by sound (Shabda-vedhi)."

"(वर्तमान में लौटते हुए दशरथ कहते हैं) हे देवि! राम के वियोग का चिंतन करते हुए मुझे अपने आप वह पाप याद आ गया, जो मैंने युवावस्था (बाल्यात्) में शब्दवेधी बाण चलाने के अभ्यास के कारण किया था।"
English Commentary
The narrative snaps back to the present. Dasharatha connects the dots for Kausalya. The phrase smṛtam pāpam (the sin is remembered) indicates that the memory was triggered by the pain of separation from Rama. He attributes the act to bālyāt (youth/folly) and his pride in being a śabdavedhy anukarṣiṇā (one who shoots by following sound). He realizes that his mastery over a lethal skill, combined with youthful recklessness, planted the seed for his current tragedy. It is a moment of total acceptance of responsibility.

दशरथ अब वर्तमान में कौशल्या से बात कर रहे हैं। वे समझा रहे हैं कि राम का वनवास कोई आकस्मिक घटना नहीं है, बल्कि उस पुराने पाप का 'स्मरण' (परिणाम) है। यहाँ 'बाल्यात्' का अर्थ बचपन नहीं, बल्कि 'युवावस्था की अज्ञानता' या 'विवेकहीनता' है। वे स्वीकार करते हैं कि उनकी विद्या (शब्दवेधी बाण) ही उनके विनाश का कारण बनी। जब व्यक्ति पर विपत्ति आती है, तो उसे अपने पुराने पाप याद आने लगते हैं; दशरथ इसी मनोवैज्ञानिक स्थिति से गुजर रहे हैं।
