Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्यायम् कर्मणो देवि विपाकः समुपस्थितः ।
अपथ्यैः सह सम्भुक्ते व्याधिरन्नरसे यथा ॥ ॥२-६४-६०॥
Tasyāyam karmaṇo devi vipākaḥ samupasthitaḥ । Apathyaiḥ saha sambhukte vyādhir anna rase yathā ॥ ॥2-64-60॥
Translation
"O Queen, the fruit of that deed has now arrived, just as disease appears in due course after consuming unhealthy food mixed with digestion."

"हे देवि! उस कर्म का फल (विपाक) अब उपस्थित हुआ है, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे कुपथ्य (हानिकारक भोजन) खाने के बाद समय आने पर अन्न के रस से रोग उत्पन्न हो जाता है।"
English Commentary
Dasharatha uses a clinical metaphor to explain Karma. Vipākaḥ implies the ripening or cooking of the fruit of action. The comparison to apathya (bad diet) leading to vyādhi (disease) is profound. Just as the body takes time to process bad food before manifesting illness, the universe takes time to process actions before manifesting consequences. The delay does not mean escape. Dasharatha acknowledges that his current suffering is essentially a delayed reaction to his own past actions, removing the blame from immediate external factors.

यह श्लोक 'कर्म सिद्धांत' की सबसे बेहतरीन व्याख्याओं में से एक है। दशरथ 'विपाक' (कर्मफल के पकने) की बात करते हैं। वे एक दृष्टांत देते हैं: जैसे हम आज गलत भोजन ('अपथ्य') करते हैं, तो बीमारी तुरंत नहीं होती, बल्कि पाचन के बाद समय आने पर ('अन्नरसे') उभरती है। वैसे ही, जवानी में किया गया पाप अब बुढ़ापे में फल दे रहा है। यह उपमा कौशल्या को (और पाठकों को) यह समझाने के लिए है कि ईश्वर या कैकेयी को दोष देना व्यर्थ है; यह दशरथ का अपना ही 'अपच' (Karma) है जो अब बाहर आया है।
