पद शब्दम् तु मे श्रुत्वा मुनिर् वाक्यम् अभाषत ।
किम् चिरायसि मे पुत्र पानीयम् क्षिप्रम् आनय ॥ ॥२-६४-७॥
pada śabdam tu me śrutvā munir vākyam abhāṣata । kim cirāyasi me putra pānīyam kṣipram ānaya ॥ ॥2-64-7॥
Translation
Hearing the sound of my footsteps, the Sage spoke: "Why are you delaying, my son? Bring the water quickly."
हिंदी अनुवाद
मेरे पैरों की आहट सुनकर मुनि (अंधे पिता) ने कहा - "हे पुत्र! इतनी देर क्यों कर रहे हो? शीघ्र जल लाओ।"
English Commentary
This interaction is the height of dramatic tragedy. The blind father interprets the sensory input (footsteps) through the lens of hope and habit, assuming it is his son. His casual, slightly scolding question ("Why delay?") contrasts horrifiedly with the reality that the "son" is actually the killer. For Dasharatha, hearing the father call him "Putra" (son) must have been agonizing, emphasizing the void he has created.

यह क्षण अत्यंत मर्मभेदी है। अंधे पिता केवल कानों पर निर्भर हैं। वे पैरों की आहट सुनते हैं और स्वाभाविक रूप से मानते हैं कि उनका पुत्र लौट आया है। उनका प्रश्न "इतनी देर क्यों?" दशरथ के हृदय को छलनी कर गया होगा। पिता का स्नेहपूर्ण अधिकार और प्यास की व्याकुलता, दशरथ की स्थिति को और विकट बना देती है। अनजाने में बोले गए ये शब्द दशरथ के लिए बाण समान हैं।
