तस्यादर्शनजः शोकः सुतस्याप्रतिकर्मणः ।
उच्चोषयति मे प्राणान्वारि स्तोकमिवातवः ॥ ॥२-६४-६८॥
Tasyādarśanajaḥ śokaḥ sutasyāpratikarmaṇaḥ । Uccoṣayati me prāṇānvāri stokamivātavaḥ ॥ ॥2-64-68॥
Translation
The grief born of not seeing that son, who never acted against me, is drying up my life-force just as the intense heat of the sun dries up a small amount of water.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस (मेरे प्रति) कभी कोई अप्रिय कार्य न करने वाले पुत्र के दर्शन न होने से उत्पन्न शोक मेरे प्राणों को वैसे ही सुखा रहा है, जैसे धूप (आतप) थोड़े से जल को सुखा देती है।
English Commentary
Dasharatha uses a powerful metaphor here: grief is the heat (sun), and his life-force (prana) is a small puddle of water. Just as shallow water evaporates quickly under a scorching sun, his life is being consumed by the burning sorrow of separation. The adjective apratikarmaṇaḥ (one who never retaliates or acts against) is crucial. It underscores that Rama was flawless in his duty as a son. This perfection makes the loss unbearable; had Rama been flawed, the separation might have been survivable. The grief is essentially the catalyst accelerating his physical death.

यहाँ दशरथ एक बहुत ही सुंदर और करुण उपमा (Simile) का प्रयोग करते हैं। जैसे गर्मी के मौसम में तेज़ धूप उथले पानी को तुरंत वाष्पित कर देती है, वैसे ही राम-विरह की अग्नि उनके प्राणों को सोख रही है। 'अप्रतिकर्मणः' शब्द विशेष महत्वपूर्ण है—इसका अर्थ है ऐसा पुत्र जिसने कभी पिता के विरुद्ध कोई कार्य नहीं किया। यदि राम ने कभी विद्रोह किया होता, तो शायद दशरथ को कम कष्ट होता। परन्तु राम की निर्दोषता और आज्ञाकारिता ही दशरथ के शोक को ईंधन दे रही है, जो अब उनके जीवन रूपी जल को पूरी तरह सुखा चुका है।
