यन् निमित्तम् इदम् तात सलिले क्रीडितम् त्वया ।
उत्कण्ठिता ते माता इयम् प्रविश क्षिप्रम् आश्रमम् ॥ ॥२-६४-८॥
yan nimittam idam tāta salile krīḍitam tvayā । utkaṇṭhitā te mātā iyam praviśa kṣipram āśramam ॥ ॥2-64-8॥
Translation
"O dear one! If you were playing in the water (which caused this delay), come now. Your mother here is anxious; enter the hermitage quickly."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(पिता ने आगे कहा) हे तात! यदि तुम नदी के जल में खेलने लग गए थे, तो अब बस करो। तुम्हारी यह माता बहुत व्याकुल हो रही है, शीघ्र आश्रम में प्रवेश करो।
English Commentary
The father's innocent speculation adds to the heartbreak. He attributes the delay to childish playfulness (salile krīḍitam), completely unaware of the fatal accident. He urges the son to return not for his own sake, but for the mother's peace of mind (utkaṇṭhitā te mātā). This displays the close-knit, loving dynamic of the family, making Dasharatha's intrusion into this bond even more destructive.

पिता को लगता है कि बालक नदी में क्रीड़ा (खेल) करने लगा था, इसलिए देर हुई। यह उनकी सरलता और वात्सल्य को दर्शाता है। वे अपनी प्यास की चिंता छोड़कर 'माता की व्याकुलता' का हवाला दे रहे हैं। 'तात' शब्द का प्रयोग बहुत स्नेहपूर्ण है। माता-पिता का यह भ्रम—कि उनका पुत्र खेल रहा है जबकि वह मर चुका है—पाठक के मन में गहरी करुणा उत्पन्न करता है।
