Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
चित्तनाशाद्विपद्यन्ते सर्वाण्येवेन्द्रियाणि मे ।
क्षिणस्नेहस्य दीपस्य सम्सक्ता रश्मयो यथा ॥ ॥२-६४-७४॥
Cittanāśādvipadyante sarvāṇyevendriyāṇi me । Kṣiṇasnehasya dīpasya samsaktā raśmayo yathā ॥ ॥2-64-74॥
Translation
Just as the rays of a lamp extinguish when the oil is depleted, all my senses are perishing due to the destruction of my mind.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे तेल (स्नेह) समाप्त हो जाने पर दीपक की किरणें बुझ जाती हैं, वैसे ही चित्त (मन) का नाश होने से मेरी सभी इन्द्रियाँ नष्ट (निष्क्रिय) हो रही हैं।
English Commentary
This verse employs a classic metaphor: the dying lamp. The Sanskrit word sneha carries a double meaning: 'oil' and 'affection/love.' Just as a lamp's rays vanish when the oil is gone, Dasharatha’s senses are failing because his life force (and his connection to Rama) is depleted. It illustrates the dependence of the senses on the mind (chitta). Without the central command of the mind, the senses collapse. This imagery poignantly suggests that Dasharatha isn't just dying from old age, but from the exhaustion of his 'oil'—his will to live without Rama.

यहाँ एक अत्यंत दार्शनिक और सटीक उपमा दी गई है। दीपक का जलना 'तेल' (स्नेह) पर निर्भर है। संस्कृत में 'स्नेह' का अर्थ 'तेल' भी होता है और 'प्रेम/लगाव' भी। दशरथ का जीवन रूपी तेल (राम के प्रति स्नेह और जीवन शक्ति) समाप्त हो चुका है, इसलिए इन्द्रियां रूपी किरणें अब बुझ रही हैं। जैसे मन (चित्त) इन्द्रियों का राजा है, उसके नष्ट होते ही इन्द्रियाँ अनाथ होकर कार्य करना बंद कर देती हैं। यह श्लोक जीवन के अंत को अंधकार (दीपक का बुझना) के रूप में चित्रित करता है।
