Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तथाप्युचितवृत्तास्ता विनयेन नयेन च ।
न ह्यस्य शयनं स्पृष्ट्वा किंचिदप्युपलेभिरे ॥ ॥२-६५-१३॥
tathāpyucitavṛttāstā vinayena nayena ca |
na hyasya śayanaṃ spṛṣṭvā kiṃcidapyupalebhire ॥2-65-13॥
Translation
Those women, well-versed in proper conduct, touched the bed with modesty and tact, yet upon touching him, they perceived no movement or sign of life whatsoever.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यद्यपि वे स्त्रियाँ उचित बर्ताव (सेवा-धर्म) को जानने वाली थीं, तथापि जब उन्होंने विनय और युक्ति पूर्वक शैया का स्पर्श किया, तो उन्हें (शरीर में) कोई चेष्टा या धड़कन नहीं मिली।
English Commentary
The verse emphasizes the decorum and training of the royal attendants. Even in their attempt to wake him, they adhered to protocol, using 'vinaya' (humility) and 'naya' (tact/gentleness). They did not shake him roughly but touched him with the reverence due to a king. The tragedy is amplified by this gentleness; the lack of response to such a delicate touch is absolute. The phrase implies a tactile discovery—the coldness or stillness that instantly communicates death without a word being spoken. It is a moment of sensory realization where the tactile experience contradicts the expectation of life.

ये स्त्रियाँ 'उचितवृत्ताः' थीं, अर्थात वे जानती थीं कि राजा को कैसे जगाना चाहिए—कोलाहल करके नहीं, अपितु 'विनयेन' (विनम्रता से) और 'नयेन' (कोमलता/नीति से)। उन्होंने बहुत ही आदरपूर्वक राजा को स्पर्श किया। परन्तु स्पर्श करते ही उन्हें एक भयानक सत्य का आभास हुआ। 'न किंचिदप्युपलेभिरे' का अर्थ है कि उन्हें प्राणों का कोई स्पंदन, श्वास या गर्मी महसूस नहीं हुई। यह श्लोक उस स्पर्श के सन्नाटे को व्यक्त करता है जो मृत्यु की पुष्टि करता है। उनकी निपुणता ही उन्हें तुरंत यह समझने में सहायक हुई कि स्थिति सामान्य नहीं है।
