Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रसुप्ते н प्रबुध्येते यथाकालसमन्विते ।
निष्प्रभा च विवर्णा च सन्ना शोकेन संनता ॥ ॥२-६५-१७॥
prasupte na prabudhyete yathākālasamanvite |
niṣprabhā ca vivarṇā ca sannā śokena saṃnatā ॥2-65-17॥
Translation
Though sleeping, they appeared as if possessed by death (or in a death-like state) and did not wake up. Kausalya looked lusterless, pale, and emaciated, crushed by grief.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे दोनों सोयी हुई थीं और (मृत्यु के) काल से युक्त सी जान पड़ती थीं, इसलिए (शोर सुनकर भी) नहीं जागीं। कौसल्या कान्तिहीन, विवर्ण (पीली), और शोक से शिथिल होकर दुबली हो गयी थीं।
English Commentary
The queens are in a deep, death-like slumber, unresponsive to the surroundings. The phrase 'yathakalasamanvite' suggests they looked as if they too were united with time (death), emphasizing their utter exhaustion. Kausalya, specifically, is described as 'nishprabha' (without glow) and 'vivarna' (pale/discolored). In Indian poetics, the King and the eldest son are the sources of a queen's radiance; with Rama exiled and Dasharatha dead (unknown to her), she is completely bereft of luster. Her physical state mirrors her internal desolation—withered and crushed by the weight of sorrow.

कौसल्या और सुमित्रा की निद्रा सामान्य नहीं थी; यह शोक की मूर्छा थी। 'यथाकालसमन्विते' का अर्थ है कि वे भी काल (मृत्यु) के वश में हुई सी प्रतीत हो रही थीं। कौसल्या का वर्णन 'निष्प्रभा' (चमक रहित) और 'विवर्णा' (रंग उड़ा हुआ) के रूप में किया गया है। राम, जो उनके जीवन का प्रकाश थे, उनके चले जाने से कौसल्या का तेज समाप्त हो गया है। वे 'शोकेन संनता' (शोक से दबी हुई) हैं। यह श्लोक दशरथ की मृत्यु के साथ-साथ रानियों की 'जीवित-मृत' अवस्था का भी चित्रण करता है।
