न व्यराजत कौसल्या तारेव तिमिरावृता ।
कौसल्यानन्तरं राज्ञः सुमित्रा तदनन्तरम् ॥ ॥२-६५-१८॥
na vyarājata kausalyā tāreva timirāvṛtā |
kausalyānantaraṃ rājñaḥ sumitrā tadanantaram ॥2-65-18॥
Translation
Kausalya did not shine, looking like a star obscured by darkness. Next to the King lay Kausalya, and next to her lay Sumitra.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अंधकार से ढकी हुई तारे की भांति कौसल्या शोभा नहीं पा रही थीं। राजा के पास ही कौसल्या थीं और उनके पीछे (बगल में) सुमित्रा थीं।
English Commentary
The simile of a star shrouded in darkness ('timiravrita tara') perfectly encapsulates Kausalya's condition—her inherent nobility exists, but it is completely eclipsed by grief. The verse also clarifies the spatial arrangement: the King is flanked by his two senior wives. This physical proximity makes the delayed realization even more tragic. They are literally beside him, yet separated by the wall of sleep and death. It underscores the silence of the King's passing—that he died so quietly that even those sleeping next to him did not stir.

यहाँ कौसल्या की उपमा 'तिमिरावृटा तारा' (अंधकार से घिरे तारे) से दी गई है। जैसे बादलों या अंधेरे में तारा अपनी चमक खो देता है, वैसे ही दुःख ने कौसल्या की आभा हर ली है। यहाँ शयनकक्ष की स्थिति (positioning) स्पष्ट की गई है—राजा के एक ओर कौसल्या और दूसरी ओर सुमित्रा थीं। यह निकटता त्रासदी को और गहरा करती है; वे अपने पति के शव के स्पर्श में होते हुए भी उनके निधन से अनजान थीं। यह दृश्य पतिव्रता धर्म और नियति की क्रूरता का संगम है।
