English Commentary
Sumitra captures the image of sorrow with her face 'stained with tears' ('shokashrululitanana'). Even in sleep, the grief over Rama's departure has not left her. The perspective shifts back to the attendants ('te' - those women/bards) who are witnessing this tableau: the dead King sandwiched between two sleeping, sorrowful wives. It is a moment of suspended reality before the chaos breaks. The juxtaposition of the 'sleeping' (queens) and the 'dead' (King) creates a powerful dramatic tension, highlighting the thin line between sleep and death.
