कौसल्या च सुमित्रा च त्यक्तनिद्रे बभूवतुः ।
कौसल्या च सुमित्रा च दृष्ट्वा स्पृष्ट्वा च पार्थिवम् ॥ ॥२-६५-२२॥
kausalyā ca sumitrā ca tyaktanidre babhūvatuḥ |
kausalyā ca sumitrā ca dṛṣṭvā spṛṣṭvā ca pārthivam ॥2-65-22॥
Translation
Kausalya and Sumitra abandoned their sleep. Upon seeing the King and touching him, (they realized the truth).
हिंदी अनुवाद
कौसल्या और सुमित्रा ने नींद त्याग दी। राजा को (उस अवस्था में) देखकर और स्पर्श करके (वे समझ गयीं कि वे नहीं रहे)।
English Commentary
This verse captures the immediate aftermath of waking up. The actions are instinctual: they look at their husband and then touch him. The juxtaposition of 'drishtva' (seeing) and 'sprishtva' (touching) is significant. Visual confirmation was not enough; the tactile sensation of the cold, lifeless body was necessary to confirm the tragedy. It portrays the intimacy of the queens who, even in confusion, reach out to their lord, only to find the 'Parthivam' (the ruler of the earth) reduced to a motionless form.

यह श्लोक उस क्षणभंगुर अंतराल का वर्णन करता है जब संदेह सत्य में बदल जाता है। नींद टूटने के बाद ('त्यक्तनिद्रे'), उनकी पहली प्रतिक्रिया अपने पति की ओर देखने और उन्हें स्पर्श करने की थी। श्लोक में 'दृष्ट्वा' (देखकर) और 'स्पृष्ठ्वा' (छूकर) शब्दों का साथ आना यह बताता है कि केवल देखने से विश्वास नहीं हुआ; मृत्यु की शीतलता को स्पर्श करके ही उन्हें पूर्ण विश्वास हुआ। यह स्पर्श उनके जीवन का सबसे दुखद स्पर्श था, जिसने उनके सुहाग का अंत कर दिया।
