Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वृद्धः चैव अल्प पुत्रः च वैदेहीम् अनिचिन्तयन् ।
सो अपि शोक समाविष्टः ननु त्यक्ष्यति जीवितम् ॥ ॥२-६६-११॥
Vṛddhaḥ caiva alpa putraḥ ca vaidehīm anicintayan । So api śoka samāviṣṭaḥ nanu tyakṣyati jīvitam ॥ ॥2-66-11॥
Translation
King Janaka is old and has few children. Thinking constantly of Vaidehi (Sita), he too, overwhelmed by grief, will surely give up his life.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राजा जनक वृद्ध हैं और उनकी बहुत कम संतानें हैं। वैदेही (सीता) का बार-बार स्मरण करते हुए, वे भी शोक में डूबकर निश्चय ही अपने प्राण त्याग देंगे।
English Commentary
Kausalya continues to dwell on the tragic ripple effects. She describes King Janaka as vriddha (old) and alpa putra (having few children). The phrase "few children" implies that his emotional investment in Sita is immense, making her loss even more unbearable. Kausalya predicts that the constant thought of Sita’s suffering will be fatal for him. She sees a parallel between her husband’s death and Janaka’s probable fate—both fathers dying of heartbreak over their children. It underscores the scale of the calamity caused by Kaikeyi’s ambition, destroying the happiness of two kingdoms.

कौसल्या पुनः राजा जनक के दुख की ओर लौटती हैं। यहाँ 'अल्प पुत्रः' एक महत्वपूर्ण शब्द है। इसका अर्थ है जिसके पास संतान कम हों (जनक की मुख्य पुत्रियाँ सीता और उर्मिला ही थीं)। कम संतान होने पर माता-पिता का मोह उन पर अधिक होता है। कौसल्या भविष्यवाणी करती हैं कि दशरथ की तरह जनक भी पुत्र-वियोग (यहाँ पुत्री-वियोग) सहन नहीं कर पाएंगे। वृद्धावस्था और भावनात्मक आघात का यह मिश्रण प्राणलेवा सिद्ध होगा। कौसल्या को लग रहा है कि यह त्रासदी केवल अयोध्या तक सीमित नहीं रहेगी, बल्कि मिथिला के राजा का भी अंत कर देगी।
