Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
साहमद्यैव दिष्टान्तम् गमिष्यामि पतिव्रता ।
इदम् शरीरमालिङ्ग्य प्रवेक्ष्यामि हुताशनम् ॥ ॥२-६६-१२॥
Sāhamadyaiva diṣṭāntam gamiṣyāmi pativratā । Idam śarīramāliṅgya pravekṣyāmi hutāśanam ॥ ॥2-66-12॥
Translation
I, a devoted wife, shall meet my end today itself. Embracing this body of my husband, I shall enter the fire.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह मैं, जो पतिव्रता हूँ, आज ही अपने पति के पास (मृत्यु को) प्राप्त होऊंगी। (पति के) इस शरीर का आलिंगन करके मैं अग्नि में प्रवेश कर जाऊंगी।
English Commentary
This verse marks the climax of Kausalya’s grief, where she resolves to commit Sati (self-immolation). Declaring herself a pativrata (devoted wife), she sees no path forward without her husband. The phrase "Embracing this body... I shall enter the fire" signifies her desire for physical and spiritual union with Dasharatha even in death. In her despair, with her son exiled and husband dead, fire seems more welcoming than a life of loneliness under Kaikeyi’s rule. It reflects the intense emotional state where death is viewed as a relief from unbearable sorrow.

यह श्लोक शोक की चरम सीमा है जहाँ कौसल्या सती होने का निर्णय लेती हैं। 'दिष्टान्तम्' का अर्थ है अंत या मृत्यु। वे स्वयं को 'पतिव्रता' कहती हैं, जिसका अर्थ है कि पति के बिना उनका कोई अस्तित्व नहीं है। वे दशरथ के शव को छोड़ना नहीं चाहतीं और उनके साथ ही अग्नि (हुताशनम्) में जल जाना चाहती हैं। प्राचीन संदर्भ में, यह प्रेम और निराशा की पराकाष्ठा है। जब पुत्र पास नहीं है और पति मृत है, तो उन्हें अग्नि ही एकमात्र शरण दिखाई देती है। यह उनके जीवन के प्रति पूर्ण वैराग्य का उद्घोष है।
