बाहून् उद्यम्य कृपणा नेत्र प्रस्रवणैः मुखैः ।
रुदन्त्यः शोक सम्तप्ताः कृपणम् पर्यदेवयन् ॥ ॥२-६६-१७॥
Bāhūn udyamya kṛpaṇā netra prasravaṇaiḥ mukhaiḥ । Rudantyaḥ śoka samptaptāḥ kṛpaṇam paryadevayan ॥ ॥2-66-17॥
Translation
Raising their arms in despair, with faces flowing with tears, the grief-stricken and miserable queens lamented piteously.

वे शोक से संतप्त दीना रानियाँ अपनी भुजाएँ ऊपर उठाकर, नेत्रों से आंसू बहाते हुए मुख से अत्यंत करुण विलाप करने लगीं।
English Commentary
This verse vividly describes the physical manifestation of grief within the palace. Raising arms ("Bahun Udyamya") while wailing is a universal gesture of helplessness and despair, seemingly reaching out to the heavens for answers. The queens are described as "Kripana" (miserable or pitiable), highlighting the sudden and drastic fall in their fortunes. Moments ago, they were the consorts of a global emperor; now, they feel destitute. The imagery of faces washed in tears emphasizes that their sorrow is not silent but an outpouring of deep agony, reflecting the magnitude of the loss of their protector.

यहाँ रानियों के शोक की शारीरिक अभिव्यक्ति का वर्णन है। 'बाहून् उद्यम्य' (भुजाएँ उठाकर) रोना असहायता का प्रतीक है, जैसे वे ईश्वर या भाग्य से प्रश्न कर रही हों कि ऐसा अनर्थ क्यों हुआ। कौशल्या और सुमित्रा सहित अन्य रानियों का विलाप केवल एक पति को खोने का नहीं है, बल्कि उस रक्षक को खोने का है जिसके कारण उनका अस्तित्व सुरक्षित था। वाल्मीकि जी ने यहाँ 'कृपणा' शब्द का प्रयोग किया है, जो उनकी दयनीय स्थिति को दर्शाता है। एक क्षण पहले तक वे चक्रवर्ती सम्राट की रानियाँ थीं, और अब वे निराश्रित विधवाएँ हैं। यह श्लोक राजमहल के भीतर के भारी विषाद को सजीव करता है।
