ता बाष्पेण च सम्वीताः शोकेन विपुलेन च ।
व्यवेष्टन्त निरानन्दा राघवस्य वरस्त्रीयः ॥ ॥२-६६-२३॥
Tā bāṣpeṇa ca samvītāḥ śokena vipulena ca । Vyaveṣṭanta nirānandā rāghavasya varastrīyaḥ ॥ ॥2-66-23॥
Translation
Covered in tears and enveloped by immense grief, the excellent wives of the Scion of Raghu (Dasharatha), bereft of joy, rolled on the ground in agony.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आँसुओं से ढकी हुईं और विशाल शोक से घिरी हुईं, रघुवंश शिरोमणि (दशरथ) की वे श्रेष्ठ रानियाँ आनंद रहित होकर जमीन पर लोटने लगीं।
English Commentary
This verse creates a powerful visual of the queens' mourning. The word "Vyaveshtanta" (rolling about/writhe) indicates a total loss of physical composure due to emotional agony. These are "Varastriyah" (noble/excellent women) who lived in luxury, now reduced to writhing on the ground. The phrase "Shokena Vipulena" (immense grief) emphasizes the magnitude of the tragedy. Valmiki portrays the raw human suffering that strips away royal dignity, showing that in the face of death and abandonment, the grief of a queen is as visceral and desperate as that of any other human being.
