Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न अराजके जन पदे बीज मुष्टिः प्रकीर्यते ।
न अराजके पितुः पुत्रः भार्या वा वर्तते वशे ॥ ॥२-६७-१०॥
Na arājake jana pade bīja muṣṭiḥ prakīryate । Na arājake pituḥ putraḥ bhāryā vā vartate vaśe ॥ ॥2-67-10॥
Translation
"In a kingdom without a King, not even a handful of seeds is scattered (sown). In a kingless land, the son does not obey the father, nor does the wife obey the husband."

राजा रहित देश में (किसान द्वारा) मुट्ठी भर बीज भी नहीं बोया जाता। अराजक देश में न पुत्र पिता के वश में रहता है और न पत्नी पति के वश में रहती है।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the breakdown of economic and social order. Economically, agriculture halts ("seed is not sown") because without a King to enforce law, property rights vanish, and farmers fear looting. Socially, the hierarchical fabric of the family disintegrates. The obedience of the son to the father and the wife to the husband—core tenets of the ancient social structure—are lost without the overarching authority of the King to uphold Dharma. It paints anarchy as a state where both productivity and morality collapse.

यहाँ सामाजिक और आर्थिक विघटन का वर्णन है। 'बीज मुष्टिः न प्रकीर्यते' का अर्थ है कि किसान खेती नहीं करते क्योंकि उन्हें फसल की सुरक्षा का भरोसा नहीं होता (लूटपाट का डर)। दूसरा भाग सामाजिक मर्यादा के टूटने को दिखाता है। राजा 'धर्म' का रक्षक है। उसके बिना, पारिवारिक संरचनाएँ (पिता-पुत्र, पति-पत्नी संबंध) भी बिखर जाती हैं। अनुशासन और भय के अभाव में समाज स्वेच्छाचारी हो जाता है। यह श्लोक बताता है कि राजा केवल सीमाओं का रक्षक नहीं, बल्कि सामाजिक ढांचे का आधार है।
