Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
त्वरमाणः च धर्म आत्मा रक्त माल्य अनुलेपनः ।
रथेन खर युक्तेन प्रयातः दक्षिणा मुखः ॥ ॥२-६९-१५॥
Tvaramāṇaḥ ca dharma ātmā rakta mālya anulepanaḥ । Rathena khara yuktena prayātaḥ dakṣiṇā mukhaḥ ॥ ॥2-69-15॥
Translation
That righteous soul (the King), wearing red garlands and smeared with red sandalwood paste, was proceeding hastily towards the south in a chariot drawn by donkeys.

वह धर्मात्मा (राजा), लाल माला और लाल चंदन का लेप लगाए हुए, गधे जुते हुए रथ पर सवार होकर तेजी से दक्षिण दिशा की ओर जा रहे थे।
English Commentary
This imagery is the definitive mark of death in Indian psyche. The 'South' (Dakshina) is the direction of Yama, the Lord of Death. To travel south in a dream signifies heading towards the afterlife. Red garlands and sandalwood are often associated with the rites of the dead or those condemned to die. The donkey cart is a vehicle of shame and bad omens, contrasting sharply with the royal horses or elephants. Bharata is essentially witnessing his father's journey to the next world.

यह स्वप्न का सबसे भयावह हिस्सा है। 'लाल रंग' मृत्युदंड या शव-यात्रा का सूचक है (जबकि मंगल कार्यों में भी लाल रंग होता है, परंतु यहाँ संदर्भ मृत्यु का है)। 'गधे' की सवारी करना अत्यंत अपमानजनक और अशुभ माना जाता है। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण है 'दक्षिण दिशा' की ओर जाना—दक्षिण दिशा यमराज (मृत्यु के देवता) का निवास मानी जाती है। यह स्पष्ट रूप से राजा की 'महायात्रा' (मृत्यु) का दृश्य है।
