सास्म्यगाधे भये मग्ना दुःखशोकसमन्विता ।
दह्यमानाऽ नलेनेव त्वद्धितार्थमिहागता ॥ ॥२-७-२१॥
Sāsmyagādhe bhaye magnā duḥkhaśokasamanvitā |
Dahyamānā'nale neva tvaddhitārthamihāgatā ॥2-7-21॥
Translation
"I am submerged in a bottomless fear, filled with sorrow and grief. Burning as if by fire, I have come here solely for your welfare."

"मैं अथाह भय में डूबी हुई हूँ और दुःख तथा शोक से घिरी हुई हूँ। आग में जलती हुई सी मैं, तुम्हारे हित के लिए ही यहाँ आई हूँ।"
English Commentary
Manthara employs hyperbolic emotional display to validate her loyalty. By claiming to be submerged in "bottomless fear" and "burning," she creates a sense of urgency and crisis. She strategically frames her distress as being purely for Kaikeyi's sake ('tvaddhitārtham'), implying that her suffering is a result of her deep devotion. This is a psychological tactic designed to lower Kaikeyi's defenses; if the servant is this terrified for the mistress, the mistress naturally feels compelled to listen seriously.
