उपस्थितं पयुञ्जानस्त्वयि सान्त्वमनर्थकम् ।
अर्थेनैवाद्य ते भर्ता कौसल्यां योजयिष्यति ॥ ॥२-७-२५॥
Upasthitaṃ payuñjānastvayi sāntvamanarthakam |
Arthenaivādya te bhartā kausalyāṃ yojayiṣyati ॥2-7-25॥
Translation
"He uses empty soothing words on you, but today, your husband is going to bestow the real substance (wealth/power) upon Kausalya."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"तुम्हारे साथ तो वे (दशरथ) केवल व्यर्थ की सांत्वना (मीठी बातों) का प्रयोग करते हैं, किंतु आज वह कौसल्या को ही 'अर्थ' (राज्य-लक्ष्मी/वास्तविक लाभ) से जोड़ने जा रहे हैं।"
English Commentary
Manthara draws a sharp distinction between empty rhetoric and tangible power. She argues that Kaikeyi receives only 'Sāntvam' (comforting words) which are 'Anarthakam' (meaningless/useless), while Kausalya is being endowed with 'Artha' (substance/kingdom). This specifically targets the insecurity inherent in a polygamous royal household. By claiming Dasharatha is favoring the first wife with real power while placating the favorite wife with mere words, Manthara ignites the spark of jealousy and rivalry against Kausalya.

मंथरा यहाँ 'शब्द' और 'अर्थ' का भेद करती है। वह कहती है कि कैकेयी को केवल खोखले शब्द (सान्त्वम् अनर्थकम्) मिले हैं, जबकि कौसल्या को ठोस लाभ (अर्थ) मिल रहा है। यह ईर्ष्या भड़का देने का अचूक नुस्खा है। सौतों के बीच की प्रतिस्पर्धा (rivalry) का लाभ उठाते हुए, मंथरा यह जताना चाहती है कि राजा का असली प्रेम कौसल्या से है क्योंकि वे उसे ही राजमाता बना रहे हैं, जबकि कैकेयी को केवल बहला-फुसला कर रखा गया है।
