मन्थराया वचः श्रुत्वा शयनात्स शुभानना ।
उत्तस्थौ हर्षसंपूर्णा चन्द्रलेखव शारदी ॥ ॥२-७-३१॥
Mantharāyā vacaḥ śrutvā śayanātsa śubhānanā |
Uttasthau harṣasaṃpūrṇā chandralekheva śāradī ॥2-7-31॥
Translation
Hearing Manthara's words, the beautiful-faced Kaikeyi rose from her bed filled with delight, appearing like the crescent moon of autumn.

मंथरा के वचन सुनकर, वह सुंदर मुख वाली (कैकेयी) हर्ष से भरकर शय्या से इस प्रकार उठी जैसे शरद ऋतु की चाँदनी (चंद्रलेखा) हो।
English Commentary
This verse delivers a stunning dramatic irony. Despite Manthara’s venomous speech, Kaikeyi reacts with pure joy ('Harṣasaṃpūrṇā'). Valmiki compares her to the 'autumnal crescent moon' ('Chandralekheva śāradī'), a symbol of pristine beauty and coolness. This metaphor underscores her current purity of heart. At this specific moment, her love for Rama is so robust that it acts as a shield against Manthara’s manipulation; she hears the news of the coronation and ignores the malice wrapped around it.

यह एक नाटकीय मोड़ (Twist) है। पाठक अपेक्षा करता है कि मंथरा की बातों का असर होगा, लेकिन कैकेयी 'हर्षसंपूर्णा' (खुशी से भरी हुई) है। वाल्मीकि जी उसे 'शुभानना' (सुंदर/शुभ मुख वाली) और 'शारदी चंद्रलेखा' (शरद ऋतु की उज्ज्वल चंद्रकला) कहते हैं। शरद ऋतु का चंद्रमा अपनी शीतलता और स्पष्टता के लिए जाना जाता है। यह उपमा बताती है कि इस क्षण तक कैकेयी का मन निर्मल है, उसमें कोई मलिनता नहीं है। उसे राम से इतना प्रेम है कि राज्याभिषेक की खबर सुनकर वह मंथरा के विष को अनदेखा कर देती है।
