उत्तमेनाभिसंयुक्ता हर्षेणार्थपरा सती ।
राममाता धनं किं नु जनेभ्यः संप्रयच्छति ॥२-७-८॥
uttamenābhisaṃyuktā harṣeṇārthaparā satī । rāmamātā dhanaṃ kiṃ nu janebhyaḥ saṃprayacchati ॥2-7-8॥
Translation
(Manthara asks): Filled with supreme joy and intent on giving away wealth, why is Rama's mother (Kausalya) lavishing riches upon the people?

(मन्थरा पूछती है): उत्तम (अत्यधिक) हर्ष से युक्त होकर और दान देने में तत्पर होकर, राम की माता (कौशल्या) लोगों को धन क्यों बांट रही हैं?
English Commentary
Manthara is observant of the unusual behavior in the palace. She notices Queen Kausalya, whom she refers to as 'Ramamata' (Rama's mother), distributing wealth extravagantly. The phrase 'arthaparā satī' implies Kausalya is currently engrossed in financial matters (specifically charity). Manthara realizes that such 'uttama harsha' (supreme joy) accompanied by massive charity usually signifies a major event, yet she remains ignorant of the specific cause.
