अतिमात्रप्रहर्षोऽयं किं जनस्य च शंस मे ।
कारयिष्यति किं वापि संप्रहृष्टो महीपतिः ॥२-७-९॥
atimātrapraharṣo'yaṃ kiṃ janasya ca śaṃsa me । kārayiṣyati kiṃ vāpi saṃprahṛṣṭo mahīpatiḥ ॥2-7-9॥
Translation
Tell me, what is the reason for this excessive joy among the people? And what is the overjoyed King (Mahipati) planning to have done?

जनता में यह जो अत्यधिक (अतिमात्र) खुशी है, इसका क्या कारण है, मुझे बताओ? और अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर महाराज (दशरथ) क्या करवाने वाले हैं?
English Commentary
Manthara presses for answers. She sees the 'atimātra praharṣa' (excessive/extraordinary joy) of the populace and correctly deduces that it stems from the King's will. She asks what the King, whom she perceives as 'samprahṛṣṭa' (overjoyed), is intending to perform. This question highlights the gap in communication; despite being close to the favorite Queen Kaikeyi, Manthara is completely out of the loop regarding the King's biggest decision, sowing the seeds of suspicion.

मन्थरा अपनी अज्ञानता प्रकट करती है। उसे केवल परिणाम (लोगों की खुशी) दिख रहा है, कारण नहीं। वह पूछती है 'अतिमात्रप्रहर्षोऽयं'—यह खुशी सीमा से परे क्यों है? साथ ही, उसे आभास होता है कि राजा दशरथ 'संप्रहृष्टो' (बहुत खुश) हैं और कुछ बड़ा 'कारयिष्यति' (करवाने वाले) हैं। यहाँ मन्थरा की छठी इंद्री (intuition) काम कर रही है कि राजा ने कुछ निर्णय लिया है, पर उसे (जो कैकेयी की सबसे विश्वासपात्र है) सूचित नहीं किया गया। यही उपेक्षा आगे चलकर उसके क्रोध का कारण बनती है।
