भरतेन एवम् उक्तः तु नृपो मातामहः तदा ।
तम् उवाच शुभम् वाक्यम् शिरस्य् आघ्राय राघवम् ॥ ॥२-७०-१६॥
Bharatena evam uktaḥ tu nṛpo mātāmahaḥ tadā |
Tam uvāca śubham vākyam śirasy āghrāya Rāghavam ॥2-70-16॥
Translation
Thus addressed by Bharata, the King, his maternal grandfather, smelled the head of that Raghava (Bharata) and spoke auspicious words to him.

भरत के ऐसा कहने पर, नाना राजा (अश्वपति) ने उस समय राघव (भरत) का सिर सूंघकर उनसे यह शुभ वचन कहा।
English Commentary
In ancient Vedic culture, 'smelling the head' was a traditional gesture of deep affection and blessing, comparable to kissing the forehead today. King Ashvapati responds to Bharata's request with paternal warmth. By speaking 'shubham vakyam' (auspicious words), the grandfather unwittingly highlights the contrast between his good wishes and the calamity that has actually befallen Ayodhya. This gesture reinforces the loving relationship between the grandfather and grandson before the abrupt departure.

वैदिक संस्कृति में 'सिर सूंघना' (शिरस्य् आघ्राय) स्नेह और आशीर्वाद की एक गहरी मुद्रा थी, जो बड़ों द्वारा छोटों के प्रति की जाती थी। यह आज के 'माथा चूमने' के समान है। राजा अश्वपति भरत को अत्यंत स्नेह के साथ विदा करते हैं। 'शुभम् वाक्यम्' का अर्थ है कि उन्होंने मंगलकारी शब्द कहे। नाना को भी नहीं पता कि अयोध्या में क्या अनर्थ हुआ है, इसलिए वे सहज भाव से प्रेम और आशीर्वाद दे रहे हैं।
